On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabites should ever come into the assembly of God, because they had not met the children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them, HOWEVER, OUR GOD TURNED THE CURSE INTO A BLESSING. So it was, when they had heard the law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel. (Neh 13:1-3) NKJV
Someone will say "what" just because of bread and water, they are denied being among the assembly of God? Others might say, this punishment is (way) too much. But basically come to think of it. What is water and bread to give to people that been trekking on foot for weeks or for months!
But some people don't know that little things matters a lot. That little gesture that you did for somebody will speak for you one day. If your gesture was evil it will always be a day of reckoning. If your gesture was a kind gesture. There is always a day of good reward and accolade.
If I decide to explain what bread and water that they needed means individually, this write-up might end up to be a book, but I will give a brief summary of this water and bread that they need means.
Literally, everyone knows that bread gives energy and in the bible, bread means life and healing. In Jn 6:35, "Jesus said, I am the bread of life" and He also said in the book of matt 15:26-28 that healing is children's bread.
So what the children of Israelites needed that bread for was for more life to continue their journey and more healing for the wounds because they have trekked for too long. But the Ammonite and Moabites refused them bluntly.
And the water, everyone knows that water is life and is for refreshing of soul. With the hot weather they have been trekking with, they needed something to keep them refreshed. But these people refused them of these desires. Instead, they went to hire Balaam to curse them. You can imagine. Let see what they did in the book of numbers.
Num 22:5-6 Then he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at pethor, which is near the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying: "Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me!
Therefore please come at once, curse these people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed."
This what they did to the children of Israelites when they needed their help, their King hired Balaam to come and curse them in order words, cast a spell on them so that he can do whatever he wants to do with them. That is to defeat and destroy them. But the God that seeth in secret turn the curses against them. If not the children of Israelites would have been wiped out today.
They did it years ago and have totally forgotten about it, and came to mingle with them. But they never knew that God is a good record keeper, he told Moses to write it down because the day of reckoning will eventually come against the people of Ammonites and Moabites. It was then that children of Israelites eyes were opened and they found out that their enemy was living among them and they began to separate themselves from the mixed multitude, immediately they heard what was written in the book of the law.
"Mixed multitude" means: they were many and it was because of those mixed multitudes that mingled with them that makes them to forget about God and start living the life of these mixed multitude. And it makes them sin against God greatly that, He allowed the enemy to come and invade their land. But God said no! enough of this, am going to make them see what was written about these people they had mixed themselves with, and the book of Moses was found on that day.
What is this Book of Moses? is the book of law that God gave to Moses that opened their eyes, the bible, the bible is our book of law, as you begin to read it always, God will begin to open your eyes to see around you the mixtures of people that were not supposed to be around you, those that come to eat the bread and drink the water, that would give you energy and life to move on.
Those that came to eat up your marriage, those that come to eat up your children, those that came to eat up your finances, those that came to cause chaos in your life, those that come to turn everything good about your life upside down and those that have been taking your name or matter to their Balaam(s) for their Balaam(s) to lay a curse on you, may God turn their curses against them and also turn it to be a big blessing to you.
The Bible said on that day, they read from the Book of Moses. The day of reckoning will against them and God will turn their plans against them. And you will be free and from their mixtures and live a blessed life.

1. Every mixed multitude around me, May God separate them from my life.
2. Oh God, let the day comes that you deliver me and my household from every evil mixed multitude.
3. Those that have taken my name to their Balaam, turn their curses against them in Jesus name.
4. Those that came to eat the bread of my life and drink the water of my life, oh God snatch it from their mouth in Jesus name.
